About the department

The Democritus University of Thrace (DPTH) was founded in 1973 by Legislative Decree 87/73, with its headquarters in the city of Komotini. It started its operation in 1974, with the Department of Civil Engineering of the School of Engineering in Xanthi and the Department of Law in Komotini. Today it includes 18 Departments, in total, with headquarters in the cities of Xanthi, Komotini, Alexandroupoli and Orestiada.
The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1974 and it started functioning in the academic year 1974-1975. It accepts approximately 150 students per year.
The purpose of the Department is to cultivate and promote the science and technology of Civil Engineering, through the dissemination of knowledge by training new scientists and the development of scientific and technological research.  Graduates will be able to undertake the calculation, study, maintenance and construction of routine as well as specialized, small or large technical projects, necessary for the development of the country, the improvement of the living conditions of its population, and the exploitation of its natural wealth. This will always be done in combination with the cultivation of a high sense of social and political responsibility, the provision of services to the public and private individuals, and in general the participation in the productive and development process of the country.
