Βιογραφικό/Faculty Bio

My name is Achilleas Samaras. I was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1982. I am Associate Professor of Maritime Hydraulics, Coastal & Harbour Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering in Democritus University of Thrace. At Democritus University of Thrace, I serve as Director of the Laboratory of Coastal & Harbour Works and Director of the MSc Programme “Hydrometeorological Disasters Management”. I am also currently Coordinating Author for the Third World Ocean Assessment (WOA III) by the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (UN DOALOS). I have a PhD in Civil Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where I also acquired my Diploma and MSc in Civil Engineering, both with "Honours" and as a Valedictorian. ​ ​Prior to my current appointment, I was a Research Fellow at the University of Bologna in Italy and have served as an Adjunct Lecturer at the Department of Marine Sciences in the University of the Aegean. ​My research interests focus on harbour, coastal and ocean engineering, including a particular interest in the dynamics of watershed-coast systems.
